Lax Kw’alaams Band – Emergency Services Building

This project is located in the remote First Nations village of Lax K’walaams, accessible only by water. Lax K’walaams is located in British Columbia’s Pacific Northwest approximately 45 minutes Northwest of Prince Rupert via water taxi.  Project included the construction of a new 5,000 ft2 Emergency Services Building. Work included all civil earthworks, utilities installations, concrete foundation, wood frame structure, with a metal clad and cedar envelope. Building houses 2 fire truck bays and 1 Ambulance bay a meeting room and emergency command center.

The remote location of this project posed may challenges as materials and equipment have to be barged with planning around the area’s extreme high and low tides. Planning logistics and timing proved critical with barging of the redi-mix concrete as well as adequately sizing loads to fit on the available barges. To facilitate living accommodations for the crew, an RV site was set up, complete with sanitary, power and water connections.
